Choco Orta - La Sonera del Nuevo Milenio


Salsa Diva and Sonera, Choco Orta,
born in the Santurce district of San Juan, Puerto Rico, has been recognized as a highly accomplished female singer, percussionist, actor and dancer. As a sonera, (improvisational vocalist) this Puerto Rican sensation has a passionate and extroverted style that makes the most of her sensual, deep and emotional contra-alto voice. The performer, whose real name is Virgen Milagros Orta Rodríguez, is considered the natural successor to Celia Cruz.

 

As a singer, Choco has performed with the orchestras of Nacho Sanabria, Roberto Angleró, Waldo Borres and Julio “Gunda” Merced. She has recorded several albums including Reina del Sabor , Sentimiento y Sabor, Ahora Mismo and the latest CD, the acclaimed 'Choco Swing". In the past few years, Choco has been singing all over Puerto Rico, France, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Sengal, Chicago, Tampa (as Puerto Rican Cultural Ambassador), Miami, and New York City. The noted vocalist is also an accomplished actor appearing in various plays and films including the Banco Popular’s special on Puerto Rican music called Raices. Her feature films include Bala perdida (2003), Assassins (1995), and A Show of Force (1990). Choco has performed alongside numerous Masters of Salsa including Celia Cruz, Tito Puente and India.
